eyeglasses_case4 Can you believe that fall is already upon us?  It seems that the temperature has dropped overnight.  Fall is usually a busy season for crafters – the various holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving present many opportunities to craft with our kids.  It’s especially for those of us who like to start early on our Christmas craft gifts.  So, to help you look for Christmas crafts to make, I’m beginning a series of posts on Christmas crafts.  Starting today, I’ll be highlighting some of my own favorite Christmas crafts to make and I hope you’ll craft along with me!

Today we’ll be making eyeglass cases (or sunglasses case, if you’re still enjoying the sunshine where you live).  This is a good craft project to introduce your kids to sewing. These eyeglass cases and sunglasses case are easy Christmas crafts to make and in a pinch, can serve as personalized, budget friendly gifts for the holidays. If your kids are still young, teach them safe techniques for hand sewing first before starting on this project. If your kids are old enough to take on the sewing machine, have them practice a few times before sewing on sunglasses case / eyeglasses case.

By using the eyeglass cleansing cloth for the interior of the case, your glasses will always be clean wherever they go!

Eyeglass Cases / Sunglasses Case Supplies:

  • 2 pieces of 4×7 inch felt (feel free to substitute in other fabric – any recycled canvas or heavy weight fabric would work)
  • 2 pieces of eyeglass cleansing cloth, also 4×7 inch.  You can find the cleansing cloth in any drugstore.
  • Pinking shears
  • A handful of pins
  • Needle and thread

Eyeglass Cases / Sunglasses Case Instructions:

  1. Line up the felt and the eyeglass cleansing cloth.  The order should be felt, cleansing cloth, cleansing cloth and felt.  When you’re done, the felt pieces should be on the outside.
  2. Pin along the edges of three sides, leaving the top edge open.
  3. Cut along the four edges with the pinking shears.  Make sure all layers are cut and try to stay as close to the edge as possible.
  4. Sew the three edges together by hand or with a sewing machine.
  5. If desired, decorate the sunglass case / eyeglass case with buttons.  Add an initial by cutting out letter on a piece of felt in contrasting color and sew it onto the case.

Bonus idea: Attach a name tag to the case for those who tend to lose their glasses!
