5 Things You Must Know Before You Craft with Kids

Caring for young children is a fun and rewarding task, but let’s face it, it can also be frustrating and challenging at times to keep children entertained and learning new things while you juggle all the tasks you have to do in the house.  It’s so easy to just let them sit in front of the TV, play with video games or surf the web all day.  The temptation is so great sometimes that you can’t help letting your kids get their share of brainless entertainment.  But afterwards, you feel a little guilty.

As a busy and concerned parent, you know that your kids deserve better.  You want them to have fun without all the violence on TV.  You want them to learn new things and open their minds to new experiences.  You want them to exercise all of their skills, not just the visual or motor skills.

And this is why it’s so beneficial to get your children to do craft activities and make craft projects.  Crafting is beneficial to children in many ways.  It encourages their imagination and builds upon their innate creativity.  Crafting promotes logic and thinking as your children process the instructions.  Crafting also enhances teamwork as they learn to share their resources and supplies with other children.

If you’re new to crafting with kids, here are some tips and advice from people who have been crafting with their kids for a long time:

  1. Be careful to give your kids a lot of freedom in their craft activities.  Let them interpret what they make.  Don’t insist that their finished project need to bear any resemblance to the craft project template.
  2. Avoid doing it for them. If they get stuck on a particular step, ask them to explain the step and figure out how they may proceed on their own.  Offer suggestions, but don’t take over the process.
  3. Avoid using negatives.  Even if the kids make something that look nothing like the craft projects, ask them about the project and talk to them about their experiences.  It’s the experience and the process that counts.
  4. Set up craft parties for your kids.  Invite their classmates to participate in the craft activities.  Instead of a typical birthday party, host a DIY craft party instead.  Your kids will enjoy working and playing with other kids.
  5. Give each kid age appropriate project to work on.  If you give younger kids a more complicated project, they may get frustrated.  If you give your older kids a really simple project, they may get bored.
