How to Make Leafy Print Artwork

Today, I’m going to share with you an easy craft suitable for young children.

We’re going to make Leafy Print Artwork.

I just love projects that have simple instructions and endless possibilities.  Today’s project is one fine example.  We’ll take the objects that are readily available, use them in a really simple process suitable for even the very young kids in the house, and transform them into pretty prints, posters, greeting cards, table clothes, placemats and more.  Your kids can also use this method to decorate their school supplies such as notebooks, binders, magazine totes.

Now, let’s get started!

What you’ll need:

  • Leaves in different shapes and forms
  • Fabric (linen and cotton work well) if you’re making table clothes, placements, etc
  • Construction paper or card stock papers in different colors – for making posters, greeting crads and more
  • Sponge brushes
  • Paper towel
  • Rubber brayer
  • Paint

How to make it:

  • Mix paint in the colors that you want.
  • Use the brush to paint the underside of a leaf.  Careful not to put on too thick of a coat.  You just want to cover the leaf with a thin coat so it’ll produce a detailed image.
  • Place the leaf over and place it on the fabric or paper (depends on what you’re making).
  • Cover the leaf with a paper tower and roll it over a few times with a rubber brayer.
  • Lift the paper tower, then the leaf gently
  • Repeat until you have the desired pattern and design.  You’ll want to wait until the first leaf has dried completely before printing the second leaf or else it’ll bleed.
  • If you’re painting on fabric, use the manufacturer’s instruction to heat-set the paint with an iron.
